When Your Ego Isn’t Fully Yours
Have you ever stopped and thought,
This part of me doesn’t even feel like me?
Maybe the way you respond in an argument sounds eerily like your mom. Maybe your confidence — or lack of it — echoes your older sister. Maybe the voice that doubts you isn’t even your own.
That’s because our ego — the “self” we show the world — isn’t formed in isolation. It’s built from what we see, hear, and feel growing up.
If you spent years watching someone you admired, feared, or envied, parts of *their* ego can slip into yours without you even realizing it.
When Your Sister Becomes Your Shado
Let’s say you had an older sister who was confident, outspoken, and in control. You might have started mimicking her without knowing it — copying her tone, her gestures, even her worldview. That’s not just admiration; that’s ego imprinting. Over time, her “ways” become your default settings.
But here’s the thing — when we adopt someone else’s ego, we also adopt their fears, insecurities, and limitations. What once felt like protection or inspiration might now feel like a cage.
The Moment of Realization
One of the most liberating moments in self-mastery is recognizing,
“That’s not actually me.”
The laugh you fake, the confidence you force, the defensiveness you carry — sometimes, those are inherited responses, not authentic ones.
When you realize this, you can start asking:
* Do I *want* to keep this part of me?
* Is it helping me grow, or holding me back?
* If I removed this influence, who would I be?
Reclaiming Your Own Ego
The process is not about rejecting people you love. It’s about returning to yourself — the self before imitation.
Here’s how to begin:
1. Observe your triggers — Notice when you react in a way that doesn’t feel natural.
2. Trace the origin — Ask yourself, “Who does this remind me of?”
3.Choose differently— Try a new response that feels aligned with your true self.
4.Practice self-reflection— Journaling helps untangle which thoughts are yours and which are borrowed.
Mastery is not about destroying your ego; it’s about *owning* it — making sure it reflects *you*, not a patchwork of everyone else.
Mastery Message: Your ego is like a coat you’ve been wearing for years — comfortable, but not always yours. The journey to Mastery is trying it on, piece by piece, and replacing what no longer fits. You have the right to design a self that is wholly yours.
